Columbus, Ohio, has installed solar-powered, touchpad parking kiosks from West Street to Long Street, according to Columbus Business First.
Robert Ferrin, assistant director for parking services, said the main reason for the kiosks was to improve aesthetics as each solar-powered device handles five to 10 spaces and replaces the "marching-soldier" look of parking meters every 20 feet.
The cost to install the devices is comparable to that of the meters, and they are less costly to operate. Other cities have realized 5 to 10 percent increases in collections from the kiosks because parkers cannot pull up and use unexpired time on someone else's license plate, Ferrin said.
